Route outline for walk nf126:
Winterton-on-Sea - Winterton Dunes National Nature Reserve - South Wood - Decay Wood - White House Farm - East Somerton - Winterton-on-Sea
Points of Interest/Notes on this walk:
The ruined St Mary Church in East Somerton was built in the 15th century & survived the Reformation but fell into disuse when the parish was swallowed by neighbouring Winterton. However, some say that a witch with a wooden leg was buried alive in St Mary's & a large oak tree grew fromher leg & destroyed the church. Today the tree can be found growing in themiddle of the original nave.
Winterton Dunes is a 1,060 acre SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) & a National Nature Reserve It has extensive dunes together with areas of grazing marsh & birch woodland. The beach is open to the public.
