The Needles is a row of three 30m high chalk stalks that rise out of the sea off the western end of the Isle of Wight. Originally, there were four stacks (you can clearly see the gap from the viewpoint). The name the Needles comes from this fourth stack, which was needle-shaped & named 'Lot's Wife'. It collapsed into the sea during a ferocious storm in 1764.
The Needles Lighthouse was built in 1859 & has walls 3ft thick. Its light can be seen 17 miles away. It has been fully automated since 1994.
