Peel Tower is 128ft high & dedicated to Sir Robert Peel who was born in nearby Bury. In 1834 he became British Prime Minister & is credited with abolishing The Corn Laws, introducing Income Tax (at 7%) & laying the foundations for the modern police force (hence the terms 'Peelers' & British 'Bobbies').
