Route outline for walk ey119:
Kilnsea - Spurn Head Peninsula - The Warren - Kilnsea Clays - Old Den - Greedy Gut - Low Light Lighthouse - Spurn Head - High Light Lighthouse - Stony Binks - Kilnsea
Points of Interest/Notes on this walk:
Spurn Head is a National Nature Reserve and dogs are totally banned. They are not allowed into the reserve even if you intend to leave them locked in your car!
There has been a pair of lighthouses on Spurn Head since 1767 though neither of the original structures remain. The current 'Low Light' Lighthouse dates from 1852 & the 'High Light' Lighthouse from 1895. Due to improvements in navigation, the light was discontinued in 1985.
Due to elaborate Sea Defences Spurn Head is relatively stable - though this was not always the case. The whole spit was washed away in 1608 and a series of breaches reduced the peninsula to a series of islands in the 1840's and 1850's.
