Points of Interest/Notes on this walk:
The Tolpuddle Martyrs:
Tolpuddle became famous in 1830 when local farm labourers were forced to accept a reduction in their weekly wage from 9s to 7s (45p to 35p). One of these labourers, George Loveless, formed a Society (or Trades Union) & held meetings under a tree on the village green - much to the alarm of the local land owners. To preserve their secrecy, Loveless introduced passwords & an oath for new members.
As a result, Loveless & five others were arrested & charged with 'taking an illegal oath'. (The local press suggested that the mens' ability to read & write was the root of the problem & that education should be abolished!)
At the 1834 trial, all six were found guilty & deported to Australia. However, all were pardoned on appeal & returned to England between 1837 & 1839. Of the six, only James Hammett returned to Tolpuddle. He died in 1891 & his grave is clearly marked in Tolpuddle churchyard.
The Martyrs' Tree in Tolpuddle village is (sadly) not the original.
