The Acorn Inn in Evershot appears in Thomas Hardy's 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' as the 'Sow and Acorn'.
Thomas Hardy's mother, Jemima, was baptised and married in St Osmond church. On the north side of the church is the thatched cottage where she spent her childhood.
The poet George Crabbe was rector of St Osmond church in Melbury Osmond from 1783-87.
