Points of Interest/Notes on this walk:
Legend has it that the shape of Bowerman's Nose is due to an archer (or bowman) who, while out hunting with his dogs, discovered a coven of witches. They turned him and his hounds to stone.
Kitty Jay was the daughter of a tenant farmer who was seduced by landowner's son. When he refused to marry her she hanged herself. The spirits of suicides were feared by local folk so Kitty was buried without ceremony in the hope that her spirit would not wander and plague the neighbourhood. The fresh flowers that always seems to be on the grave are said to be placed by a ghostly hand.
The snack van that is often to be found at Swallerton Gate is called 'Hound of the Basket Meals'
