A steady ascent through the woods behind the Ravenstone Hotel before gaining the ridge. Our descent took us past the white stones towards Dodd before winding through the forest tracks back to the car park. [with] Pam Bennett, Oliver Bennett, Thomas Bennett. [weather] Overcast to begin with, brightening up later.

[weather] Great day for it - windy to start but the sun came out there was a little heat that was wonderful. - Loved walking with someone else - very different, & I don't normally stop for a cuppa but it was fab. Tough work getting up Ullock Pike, but once that was done the rest was pretty straightforward.

We managed to scramble & follow the higher small path which people have started to make. Little scary

[weather] Cloudy. - By starting in the small lay-by near High Side farm it gives you a superb approach to the Ullock Pike ridge walking up the secluded valley of Southerndale. Ullock Pike itself has a false summit when seen from below. the true summit is only seen when the false one has been reached. After this the gradient eases & you reach the slender top of Long Side edge after a matter of minutes. There are superb aerial views of Bassenthwaite Lake for most of the climb along the long ridge. Fantastic!

Did not proceed to point 2 on the suggested route but instead took short cut as shown on the diagram. Rest of the route was followed rigidly. Arrived back at the hotel at 1320hrs. Thoroughly enjoyable day. Other walkers present also making the most of the weather.

Richard Marchant walked up Long Side on October 11th, 1988 [from/via/route] We parked off a minor road to Orthwaite we made an ascent up to Ullock Pike via the Allerdale Ramlbe footpath then along the Longside Edge to Carl Side & still on the Allerdale Ramble up to the top of Skiddaw. A fantastic day out with my Mum, awesome views & my first ascent of Skiddaw with many more that followed. A lovely memory for me. [with] Mum & Dad [weather] A fine day with not wind wall to wall sunshine - The ascent of Skiddaw was taken during a weeks holiday in the Lakes with Mum & my Dad although I just went out walking up the mountains with my Mum as my Dad was not fit enough to join us.
