Cold northerly wind. - Happily the sun came out for the long steep descent off Dale Head to Dale Head Tarn. The short climb to the summit of High Spy was made more interesting by keeping left close to the steep drop of crags. The summit cairn on High Spy marks the southern end of Maiden Moor a fairly level grassy ridge over a mile long.

Headed too far East & found ourselves on Scaleclose Coppice rather than the Allerdale Ramble below. On track, & checked with fellow walkers for Tongue Gill. Very slippy underfoot with rain. From mines, & gate headed up hillside & found ourselves off track & needing to retrace to find High Spy stone stack. Retraced route should have taken. Took an hour longer due to navigation errors.

This walk was basically the Newlands Round although we didn't take in Hindscarth. We started with the ascent of Cat Bells & basically followed the ridge up to High Spy then dipped down before ascending Dale Head. With my Mum being a bit tired we missed Hindscarth out & carried on along the ridge to Robinson & then cut down in to the Newlands valley & worked out way back to the car. Another lovely memory for me. [with] Mum & Dad [weather] A fine day with no wind & wall to wall sunshine - Carried out the Newlands round horseshoe with my Mum & was taken during a weeks holiday in the Lakes with Mum & my Dad although I just went out walking up the mountains with my Mum as my Dad was not fit enough to join us. We stopped at a self catering cottage at Dockray. Probably the last holiday I had away from Dorset with my Mum & Dad,
