Q. I am trying to use the interactive map but it will not load. A box says I need a later version of Flash Player. I have installed the latest version but the interactive map will still not load.
A. Most internet browsers are slowly phasing out the ability to play content created in Adobe Flash. Indeed, Google Chrome says it will no longer support Adobe Flash after December 2020. It has never been possible to play Adobe Flash content on an Apple iPhone or iPad due to the feud between former Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Adobe.
In the meantime it is possible to get flash content (e.g. Walks on Ordnance Survey Explorer Maps or Walk Routes on Interactive Ordnance Survey Explorer Map OL24 The Peak District - White Peak area to play on a Desktop Mac or Windows 10 PC:
- Open the page with the flash content on it
- Click on the Get Adobe Flash*Player icon
- Click on the 'plug-in blocked' symbol that appears on the right hand side of the url field
- A window opens that says Flash was blocked open this page
- Click on Manage
- In the window that opens click on change 'Block sites from running Flash (recommended)' to 'Ask first' by clicking on the toggle
- Go back to the go4awalk.com page with the flash content on it
- Click on the Get Adobe Flash*Player icon
- Click 'Allow'
- The page should reload with the 'Adobe Flash' content loaded and running
Note: You should only have to perform steps 1 - 7 once. You will have to perform steps 8 & 9 everytime you open your browser though. It does not seem to be possible to set Chrome to open Flash content by default anymore.
