Can you answer this?
Q. Hi
I've got a question paper and can't find the answer to any of these questions.
Got any ideas?
- There are a number of mountains/upland area's in the British Isles whose common names are not their original names. Do you know of any?
- On which British mountain could you 'Thread The Needle'?
- Where in Scotland would you find 'The Window'?
John, Exeter
NB. We would not normally publish questions like these - preferring the student to discover the answers for themselves - but after a suitable lapse of time we thought you might find them entertaining. Oh, and has anyone got any answers? Ed.
A. 1 Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) comes to mind as one. Several others have anglicised names, Buachaille Etive Mor is "The Buckle" to most of us without an understanding of Gaelic but I doubt if this is what is meant by the question. 2 The only needle to thread that I can call to mind is on Pulpit Route on Milestone buttress at the bottom of Tryfan. The route involves climbing through a hole and then on up; the rope effectively threading a needle. Napes Needle doesn't have an eye in so I doubt that one. 3 The Window is a saddle on Creag Meagaidh (Or "Craig Meggy" to us saxonaches)

A. Not sure about the other two questions - but is the needle Napes Needle on Great Gable? Or is it The Needles off the coast of the Isle of Wight?
