GPS Waypoints in GPX or LOC file formats
Q. Hi There,
Do any of your dowloadable GPS routes or waypoints come in GPX or LOC file
formats.
As this is a very popular format can you point me to where they may be?
Regards Phil.

A. All our Downloadable GPS waypoints are available in GPX (.gpx) file format and Text (.txt) file format and this is sufficient to cover most requirements.
To upload GPS Way Points into most modern GPS Devices simply connect the GPS to your computer using the USB cable and place the GPX document downloaded from go4awalk.com into the GPX folder on your GPS.
Alternatively you can use software to interface between your computer and your GPS Device. Which software you require depends on the file format you choose and your type of computer.
To upload GPS Way Points in GPX (.gpx) format into your GPS Device from IBM based PC computers (Windows, Vista etc.) we suggest Garmin Basecamp (free) or EasyGPS (free version),
To upload GPS Way Points in GPX (.gpx) format into your GPS Device from Apple Macintosh computers (Mac OS X 10.4.0 or later) we suggest Garmin Basecamp (free) or MacGPS Pro (small fee)
There are a surprisingly large number of different file formats for GPS Waypoints (see below) and it would not be practical to have them available in every one.
Fortunately if you need the waypoints in a more obscure format it is very easy to convert them.
Downloadable GPS Waypoints on go4awalk.com are also available as a simple Text (.txt) file. This is because the .txt file format is flexible and not platform specific - i.e. it can be read just as easily by Mac (OS9 and/or OSX) or IBM based computers.
To upload the GPS Waypoints in Text (.txt) format into your GPS Device (or convert the GPS Waypoints to another file format) - you need an extra bit of software called a GPS Utility.
For IBM based computers we suggest you use the GPS Utility - since it works, is free (as a limited edition - which is all you need even for long paths like the Pennine Way or Coast to Coast walk) and has a wealth of features.
With regard to which file formats GPS Utility supports, the following is taken from the GPS Utility Help files:
[With GPS Utility] you can Save/Export selectively and in the following formats:
- GPX interchange format (*.gpx)
- PXC5 (for import to MapSource)
- Waypoint+ (text format)
- Yeoman (*.wpl)
- Ozi Explorer (*.wpt, *.rte, *.trk)
- Autocad (*.DXF)
- AutoRoute Express
- GPS Pilot Topographer
- Delorme (*.gpl)
- Dbase fileset (DBF, SHP and SHX files) (for DataSend)
- Shape fileset (SHP, SHX, DBF)
- Fugawi waypoints OR tracks
- Gardown tracks (gtr)
- Magellan SD Card format (*.txt) Waypoints/Routes OR Tracks
- Mapinfo fileset (*,mif, *,mid)
- PDB file (Pathaway)
- Route Details
- Tracks as raw data
- Waypoints in Maptech format (*.mxf)
- Routes in Maptech format (*.rxf)
- Tracks in Maptech format (*.txf)
- Surfer tracks (*.bln)
- Surfer waypoints (*.dat)
- TomTom Navigator (*.ov2)
- GPSU
Note: some formats may restrict the selection to just waypoints, routes or trackpoints and some may impose a particular file separator character or date format.
Some file formats can not be re-imported into GPS Utility - you will be given a warning message.
