Food for walks
Q. I'm bored with eating jam rolls when I'm out walking. Is there a better more exciting energy food I can eat when out and about?
Alan Rebbeck, Basildon
A. Nuts and raisins are good walking foods. Also apples, tangerines, that kind of thing are nice and juicy and easy to carry. I always take water and usually some juice as well. The parkin cake sounds great, but I'm not too sure about jam rolls!
Jane Wescombe, Galapagar, Madrid
A. I make a mean Yorkshire Parkin that provides a lot of tasty energy in a small, sturdy slice that travels well. It's a cake made with black treacle and oatmeal and it really needs to be made about 2 weeks before cutting but the cake is big, you only need small slices at a time and it keeps brilliantly for ages. I also find peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches a satisfying energy-filled lunch that also travels well. Happy scoffing!

A. Have a look at Nutrition in Hill Skills and the results of a poll we carried out called Treats in the Discussions section of the Bunkhouse.
Hope this helps
