In-use Test:

I tested a pair of Karrimor's X Lite Helium Weathertite Trousers on a showery day in the Peak District on the hills between Winster and Bonsal. Since the day started out dry I packed the trousers away in their stuff sack and put them in my rucksack. They folded up really small and are nice and lightweight I hardly noticed they were there.

About a mile into the walk, the heavens opened and I put the trousers on under the shelter of some trees. I found the two-way zips on each leg opened all the way from the ankle to the upper thigh, so I could easily get them on without taking my boots and gaiters off - and without having to contort my aging and inflexible body into positions it did not want to go.

Once on, I found the Karrimor X Lite Helium Weathertite Trousers to be comfortable, waterproof and breathable. The full length leg waterproof zips did not leak. The bottom of each trouser leg is elasticated and has a popper to hold them tight to your boots. The waist is also elasticated and tightened by a draw cord which tended to work loose as I walked. There are no pockets or slits to enable access the pockets in my walking trousers which may be a problem for some. This does mean that to get anything out of my pockets I had to undo my rucksack belt first and go in via the waistband. However, no slits means no leaks either though which is preferable to damp pocket contents (particularly if they are sweeties!).

I had intended to take them off again when the rain stopped - but found I could open the two-way zip from the thigh down to my knee to get plenty of ventilation to my legs. This proved a good idea since it wasn't long before the rain came tumbling down again and I zipped up and let the Karrimor X Lite Helium Weathertite Trousers do their stuff.

Buying Advice:

Waterproof, breathable and lightweight - everything you need in a pair of waterproof over trousers at a very reasonable price. They now have a permanent place in the bottom of my rucksack ready for use when the rain comes down.

• They're brilliant. I've a pair the same in ladies trousers and I use them regularly. The high zips are great. They never get too hot. I'm going to buy a second pair.
