In-use Test:
Merrell's Wilderness Canyon are a high-cut, full grain leather boot with a distinctly low key look - unless of course you take the coloured lace option!
True to size, they were mostly comfortable 'straight away although with a slight rub on one of my ankles. They are now fine and I'm enjoying the padding around the ankle cuff and the bellows tongue. My heels were held well in place and the sole/heel design has kept my feet comfortable during some frequent periods over asphalt and gravel. I've worn them frequently in reasonably heavy rain and through wet grass and they've kept my feet dry and warm.
The 2mm lugs on the sole provided good traction over the wet grass and mud that has been a feature of my recent walking. There's some longitudinal/lateral stiffness but these are a relatively flexible boot albeit with some decent protection at the toe and heel.
The lacing system works well - I found it easy to tighten the laces at the front of my foot and around my ankle. And the manufacturer supplies laces in a conventional colour along with a more 'striking' hue for the fashionista.
Early days yet - but so far there's no signs of wear and tear but will report back.
Merrell's Wilderness Canyon did a good job for me during relatively short days spent walking over moorland, woodland tracks, canal towpaths. I'd probably also be happy wearing them on lower Lakeland fells where there are relatively well made paths. On rockier, more mountainous routes (or for walking with with a heavy pack) you'll need a walking boot with more ankle support. They also work well for winter leisure wear.
