In-use Test:

I tried out the Brass Monkeys Long Sleeve Crew Neck on some bitterly cold days in the peak district and was mightily impressed. This base layer is made from fine merino wool and feels extremely soft next to the skin, with no sign of itchiness. I was wearing my usual size (XL), and I found it to be fairly tight on all parts of my torso. This is actually necessary for it to work effectively, so this was not an issue and something I would expect from this type of garment.

The sleeve length is excellent, and the tail has extra material to cover my buttocks. In any event, the fabric has a built-in stretch, so the freedom of movement is very good all around. This close fit has the added benefit that it didn't ride up even during quite vigorous activities.

After a couple of similar trips to the Cambrian Mountains, this base layer continued to perform well and remained odourless (as far as I could tell). When it comes to laundering this base layer, the label says 'cool machine wash on a short gentle cycle using wool detergent' which makes a refreshing change from the often obligatory 'hand wash only'. This garment survived the process with no ill effects and quickly air-dried on a clothes rack. (The label also says 'warm iron'. Who irons a figure hugging base layer?)

Raglan sleeves are sleeves that extend in one piece fully to the collar, leaving a diagonal seam from under your arm to your collarbone. This means there are no seams on the top of the shoulders, which means there is less chance of any 'rub' when wearing a backpack.

Buying Advice:

Soft against the skin and an effective base layer - what's not to like? While the RRP is £70.00 at the time of writing the Brass Monkeys Long Sleeve Crew Neck for Men was available from Amazon UK for £54.00 so it might be worth shopping around a bit.
