Walks near Sleaford, Lincolnshire
Q. Does anyone know an easy walk around the Sleaford area of Lincolnshire?
Steve Byatt, Sleaford
A. Barry Smith obviously does NOT know Lincolnshire. Admittedly, there are a lot of very flat areas, especially around Boston and the Wash. But just go through Lincoln and the scenery changes to the rolling hills of the Wolds

A. Try the newly restored (almost) Sleaford Navigation.
It is just about the only interesting walk in the area! All of Lincs is so flat it has (almost) no features!
The Navigation is full of history, I did part of the walk when I was on holiday 2 years ago, the restoration was in full flow then. The navigation's full route can easily be seen on any map as it used the River Slea and Kyme Eau which are marked on all maps and there is a towpath throughout the whole route. I believe it is approx. 10 miles in length.
The Navigation begins at a junction on the River Witham Navigation at Chapel Hill, about 2 miles south of Tattershall Bridge (A153). It passes through several pretty villages, open country, farmland and has several locks and wharfs with mills. Cogglesford Lock and Mill are among the most interesting, they are reached on the outskirts of Sleaford.
I will leave you to plan your route, get a map from the Tourist Information, or the Navigation Society. Buses will return or take you to start points.
Enjoy your walk.
