Ice Axes for Winter Walking
Q. I was just wondering how many people use ice axes on winter hikes.
I tend to do most of my hiking in the summer but would like to do more winter hiking.
Has any one got an opinion of there usefulness and could anyone recommend any particular models of ice axe.
Dave Uns, Leeds
A. My experience of winter walking is minimal and I would not wish to use an axe "in anger". I try to avoid a slip in the first place by wearing crampons (Grivel G10) and regard an ice axe as a last resort. I carry one as a walking stick and for support when trekking poles are ineffective.
In December 2008 I descended Glaramara wearing crampons until I reached the road: the path was a river of ice.

A. Hi, If your planning on going out walking in winter - with the intention of meeting snowy conditions then I would regard an ice axe as an absolute essential piece of kit. An axe can be used as a walking aid for balance in the snow, or more imporantly can save your life should you slip at any time. If your planning on undertaking true winter walks in Snowdonia/Scotland/harder routes in the lakes then ice axe and crampons are a definite must. In which case I would also find someone who can demonstrate to you how to use them effectively as well.
