Walking Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk with kids

Q. Planning to do the C2C [Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk] with our 15 year old and two 12 year-old boys. Whole family very sporty and fit. Aiming for a 15-day itinerary. Wondering about accommodation. One idea is to rent self-catering cottages in 2 base locations to cover West and East sections and drive/bus the various stages each day. That way we have our own space to spread out and dry kit etc every evening. Has anyone tried this method?
